The placement test for this class is FREE, open to all, a good review in itself, and can be taken in parts for those registering for certain levels. All students will need to complete parts of the exam prior to attending class. The placement results provide an entrance test that can be compared to an exit test for each topic covered. The exam can be taken with or without notes, but for accurate results, it should NOT be taken with assistance or the use of an e-translator. 21st LA has you take the test at home under an honor system, but has you declare whether you used notes. There are various forms of the test and free speaking and writing samples are collected so usually cheating can be identified, especially after in-person observations.

Overview of Course

Purpose of this Course: This course is a pilot program designed to address concerns and real shortcomings in student's education in general and after Covid and it provides opportunities for students that excelled in Spanish or showed promise or interest, to further excel. Students are often surprised at the challenge that learning a second language entails. Many lack the study, life and academic skills that it takes to learn a second language well when not immersed 24-7 in the second language and culture. It is important for educational success, to build solid educational foundations and then build upon them. This Spanish 2 Prep Course is to help high school students who took Spanish 1 and want or need more. For some, it is a second chance, now that they have a year's worth of experience and a sense of things, a chance to learn the most influential topics better. For others, it is a way to further practice and super enhance what was already learned at one point without spoiling higher-level Spanish classes and all the opportunities that they offer. Therefore, there are three levels offered to students in each class. All students at all three levels can attend any class that they like. Students will work on the same topics generally together, but will work at their appropriate level and under lesson different expectations. Students choose the goals for each lesson that they want to reach based on their values, priorities, and their personal goals. Not everyone wants to master a second language or thinks right now that they will major or minor in it in college. Others can't envision right now that they will ever need to use it a second language to make a final sale, communicate well with co-workers or employees or go beyond the current technology and make a connection with a native speaker so personal that they will get the million $ contract that others also desperately want, but can't create just with the technology. Students are encouraged, of course, to speak to their familes about those goals to ensure parents do not think their goals are too low, and no one will be allowed to continue with the course if they do not show a desire to try or primarily want to learn. 21st LA is not a care center for high school students, but rather it is a caring center for growth and development for Spanish language skills, knowledge and understanding and a place where we all work on becoming better, more skilled-in-life-and-better-prepared-for-life people.

Topics

Most if not all these topics will be covered during the course. Students will strive to learn as many topics as best as they can while learning the essential ones at a necessary level in the time given. Once a student has reached their goal with that topic, they spend the rest of their class time reviewing important vocabulary for either recognition or for greater recall and skill. The topics are not necessarily listed in the order taught.

Vocabulary is smattered in all these topics (verbs, family, food, clothing, house, community, body, numbers, etc.). Students will be reminded of vocabulary connected with each grammar topic covered. Once a student shows an ability to understand a particular grammar topic and be skilled in it to an acceptable level, the student then focuses on learning more of the vocabulary associated with that topic. A student who failed to memorize a year's worth of vocabulary will most likely not be able to learn at the recall level all vocabulary missed, but can review and learn much before the start of the school year.
