Targets for All

Student Rules/Responsibilities/Behavior Targets

  1. Be respectful of others and yourself. Speak well of and to others. Speak well of and about yourself. Use a tone that is welcoming and assumes the best intentions. Do not touch anyone else's possessions without their permission. Treat others and their possessions with care. Care for and leave all environments better than how you found them. Clean up thoroughly after yourself. Make positive contributions to the 21st LA world and its people. Strive to be the best version of yourself daily in class. Remember, every minute is another fresh start. Be respectful of other's time. Admit and sincerely apologize when you make an error or hurt others. Tell others in a respectful manner when you have been hurt or offended. Do not use offensive or intimidating language. Sincerely encourage and build up those around you. Try not to be the center of attention, but rather share the limelight readily with others, especially those who haven't been noticed in a while. Find something you sincerely like about those not noticed in a while or their work and let them and others know about it. Get enough sleep, exercise, and social interaction outside of class. Eat well. Seek advice and help from a trusted adult or peer when needed. When one person in a group is talking, all others are intentively listening (eyes on the speaker and following their movement, heart & brain open to hearing what they are truly saying...knowing that not everything is expressed with words). Be cooperative. Electrical devices (computers, tablets, cell phones) are only to be used FOR LEARNING during class unless there is an emergency. Text, call, and check social media prior to entering the building. Use time prior to class and after to interact with those physically present. If you miss class, the teacher is not required to help you catch up. She may help if she has time, but she is not obligated to help.

  2. Dress appropriately and modestly and be aware we are guests. Please no cleavage, undergarments, super tight clothing, or shorts/skirts shorter than your fingertips when hanging down. Symbols and wording on clothing should not be suggestive or controversial. If possible, come to class showered. All environments are most likely air-conditioned. While on a rented property, realize we are guests. Be very quiet in the hallways. Keep noise level reasonable during class time. Realize there are others in the building who need an environment in which to work efficiently. Smile and greet others in the hallway with titles of respect when they are not busy. Be aware of your surroundings. Keep bathrooms clean and do not create any unnecessary work for others-be tidy, flush toilets, wash hands, keep sinks dry for the next person.

  3. Attend class regularly. Be engaged in what you are learning. Set your own personal goals, make them specific and give them clear time frames. Seek assistance on how you can achieve them and whether they are doable with the time and resources you have available. Be brave. Take reasonable risks. Ask thoughtful questions. Use your time wisely. When frustrated or when you experience failure, setbacks, challenges or have a bad day, don't let it, in the end. stop you from moving forward. Strive to complete what you are being asked to complete by the time you are asked to complete it. Listen attentively to any directions given. Take time to actively process first yourself any information given. For example, read directions, think for a minute about what the teachers or others said. Ask for clarification about anything that you don't understand after that. Bring home, work and supplies for online days. Bring back to school, work and supplies after online days. Own your education...it is yours to access or yours to waste.

  4. Follow cooperative online protocol. Be clear whether a day is an in=person or online class. If it is an online learning day know whether it is synchronized or asynchronized or a combo with some check-in times. Check the 21stLA website calendar. Make sure all your needed electronic equipment is charged and needed supplies are available. Make sure others in your house know early that you need good WiFi with video. 21st LA uses Zoom. Ensure that you are comfortable with that platform and can load it prior to the first day of class. Call if questions. Plan on having cameras and microphones on unless requested otherwise. Be near working computer when cameras and microphones are on or off. Don't be a distraction during an online class or leave the screen area without permission. Respond immediately as a group or individual when requested. Dresscode is the same as in class. Rules are the same as if in class (i.e. treatment of teacher and classmate, engagement expectations, attitudes, etc.). Do not leave class until excused. Check-in as requested. When working in small groups, follow all rules and use your time wisely, during group work share the workload equally as much as possible and be kind and interested in your fellow small group members. Check back in with the teacher or large group when small group work is completed. Send a chat if you or your group have a question. Make sure all teammates are aware of online rules and norms. Keep each other in check nicely. Do quality work(your best) when at home working independently or online. Read and listen attentively to any direction given. Watch short video messages multiple times if needed. Take time to actively process any information first yourself. For example, read directions, think for a minute about what the teachers or others stated, then ask for clarification about anything that you don't understand. Bring home, work, and supplies for online days. Bring back to school, work and supplies after online days. Be honest when testing at home. Cheating truly only cheats you.

  5. Offer the best you have of yourself each day and try to believe good things will happen if you try. Don't treat your fears as if they are real unless there is proof that they truly exist or are about to. Fears are not reality...deal with reality and look for ethical solutions to your and other's problems or concerns. Find out a trusted adult's or the teacher's perspective about your fears. Don't let your past determine your future. Who you were isn't who you eventually will be...you are young....over the next few years you will change a lot and not just physically...so bend toward the better version of yourself.

  6. Realize none of us are perfect. Give yourself and others space to make mistakes; space to grow and learn--especially if they seem to be doing the best that they can at the time with what they can muster. Appreciate second chances, but don't expect them. Try to avoid past mistakes and ask someone to remind or help you with common pitfalls. Stay connected to those who are healthy and know you best. Allow them to give you honest, constructive feedback--especially if it is fair and true. Be coachable. Always try to kindly word feedback and help all see the complete picture by sandwiching in challenging feedback between all that is good. Remember this is a pilot program...unexpected issues are likely to develop. Notice all that is good and all that has been achieved before giving needed feedback. If emotional, try not to respond immediately. Be patient(with yourself, others and the situation) when needing to work through a challenge. Own your mistakes, but realize that you are more than your mistakes.

Parent Rules/Responsibilities

  1. Please utilize the resources provided to you to the utmost. Note and become accustomed to this 21st LA webpage, sign-up for Facebook notifications, Follow us on Instagram and receive notifications on Remind (if given out). All contact information is on this website here. Fill out requested documents online (especially interest form ASAP completely and carefully) and final registration when it comes available. Request assistance if needed or as issues arise. Emails are often better, but phone calls will be responded to in 48 hours or less usually. Submit payment promptly. Check or cash will be accepted for now and will be given in person on first day of class. Encourage your student to do promptly their preparatory work (such as placement test on dates it is available) as well.

  2. Please provide a means for your child to attend classes-both online and in person. Call 311 or visit our city website to explore free curb to curb public transportation early to various locations since advance notice is needed. For absences known in advance, communicate with 21stLA via this form. Realize your student can not achieve as much if they are absent (either in person or virtually). On virtual days, students will most likely be asked to check in once work is complete. Please ask your student about this. Time changes should be infrequent and can be requested here. Ask your child every couple of days about how the class is going and encourage them to speak to me early about issues, concerns, or needs/needs for modifications. Please support your child at or just above their development and maturity level. Remind them to prepare for class, ensure supplies are brought back and forth between online and in-person locations, ensure that they have reliable transport to and from class, a water bottle for the journey, are well-fed, have well-charged technology, reliable WiFi, needed school supplies and can access and understand the content provided on the 21st LA website and other resources to ensure they know each day where their particular class is held, what the work is that needs to be completed that day, and how to reach out for help if needed. Please realize that when classes are held in person, not all work done will be posted online or will be as fun to do since more group work is possible in person. If your child is frustrated after trying to work out any challenge with me or others in a respectful manner or hasn't reach a conclusion that they are happy with, please feel free to shoot me an email or give me a call. As a parent-instructor-student team, we will together explore any remaining options not yet explored. Never be concerned about coming forward...much can be resolved with early and clear communication. Please include cell in messages in cases a quick person-to-person interaction is needed.
